And the mystery diagnosis is....

Giardia!!

20 pounds, 8 weeks, 5 blood tests, 4 pregnancy tests, 2 ultra sounds, 2 stool samples, 1 HIDA scan, 1 colonoscopy, 1 endoscopy, and 1 gall bladder later...they have finally found the source of me being sick. The giardia parasite has been in me so long now that the doctor said it could take several rounds of medicine to kill off the parents AND the eggs that have set up colonies in my intestines. Isn't that disgusting? I have no idea where I could have picked up this ugly visitor but I am ready for it to leave me alone.

The pills are gross and make me even more nauseous but I am so glad to finally know what is wrong with me and I have lots of hope that it will all be over soon. Thanks for the prayers on my behalf.

Oh, how wonderful! Well... you know what I mean. Our whole neighborhood has been so worried about you! I'm so glad it is something fixable and I just wish it didn't make you worse before it gets better :( How on EARTH did it take them this long to figure out??!!!! A colonoscopy? REALLY? I am sooooooo sorry. How long are the rounds of medication? How long until they think you should be feeling somewhat human again? You are amazing, and what a blessing! Well... relatively. Really, you know what I mean. And yes... that is disgusting :)

I am so glad that this craziness is finally almost over for you. I really hope the medication works quickly to get rid of the bugs. You're seriously due for some good times again. (This whole thing sounds like an episode of House. We should call the producers and let them know that they need to pay you some big time royalties:)

Dear Giardia,

Who do you think you are, making Shannan so miserable? That's just a disgusting, rude, very sad existence you lead... but not for long.

I started to write a poem about you to make Shannan smile, but you're not worth my time.

Disrespectfully,
Angela C. Ross

But at least you have an answer.

That all sounds completely miserable. I am glad that they were finally able to figure it out. Hopefully the medication(s) will start to kick in and you will be on the road to recovery soon. I hear Giardia can be horrible. So sorry.

Hoorah! Hoorah for the doctor who finally figured it out! Where on earth did you pick it up? Have you been drinking from those mountain streams again lately? We always joked around about Giardia...but no more! Hope you are feeling better soon!

Wow! I'm so glad they've finally discovered the problem and that they can fix it! Going to third-world countries can be hard in this way (my hubby went to Honduras on his mission and avoiding all the parasites was an impossibility). I hope those parasites are killed off soon so you start feeling great again.

I am so sorry! That happened to me when I was a freshman in high school. It is the worst, but I am glad you will be feeling better soon.
